Visit to BP HIVE 17th May 2013

Today a group from the School visited BP to see the capabilities of the HIVE. The group consisted of a number of students from our BSc, MSc and PhD degrees as well as a number of visiting summer students and some staff.

The HIVE makes use of a curved screen running at a resolution in excess of 3500 x 1024 pixels in conjunction with active 3D glasses. We also saw some of the “safe” video conferencing equipment used out on oil platforms. Details on other wireless sensors for monitoring pipes and “safe” access points. One striking thing is the weight & cost of these items due to the safety requirements of the environment.

Details regarding the visit & location of BP can be found in a previous post. As you can see from the image below the HIVE makes use of three projectors to generate a seamless image on the curved screen. You can get a sense of the curved screen from some images taken during last years visit.
