CBR for Remote Patient Care

Case-Based Reasoning technology is being applied in the health-care domain as part of a Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) between RGU and AxSys Technology. The company partner, AxSys Technology, based in Glasgow, is committed to improve the delivery of patient-centric care through Health Information Technology. Its main product, ExceliCare, is the selected platform for the National Generic Clinical System for NHS Scotland.

One of the components developed by AxSys is used for the remote monitoring of chronically-ill patients, with patients periodically phoning in to the system to complete automated questionnaires. The underlying rule-based system has proven to be very successful in reducing the number of hospital admissions while at the same time raising the standards of home care. AxSys has recognised the potential for further improvement of remote patient monitoring and alerting systems by employing methods such as CBR. The project with RGU aims at using CBR to improve remote patient care. In particular we will integrate automated knowledge acquisition tools for a CBR system within the ExcelCare environment.

The image below illustrates the layered application architecture that is currently being developed to embed case-based reasoning functionality within ExceliCare.
