My Research

My primary research interest is in the field of Computational Intelligence (CI) - particularly, in the application of CI heuristics (such as Genetic Algorithms, Particle Swarm Optimisation and Estimation of Distribution Algorithms) to single- and multi-objective optimisation problems. Such heuristic optimisation enables one to effectively search through a very large set of potential solutions to a problem with the purpose to find either the best solution or at least a set of solutions that satisfy the problem's constraints. Also, I am interested in deleveloping novel approaches to tuning the performance of CI algorithms so that an acceptable solution to an optimisation problem can be found in real time (esp. online) or on resource-starved platforms (e.g. mobile computing devices).

Secondly, since my undergraduate years I have a long-lasting interest in computer-assisted measurements and virtual instrumentation systems. The main benefits of such systems are in their provision of remote monitoring facilities (in particular over the Internet), improved versatility and customisation of instruments, as well as in creating a framework for adding intelligent features to measurement systems (such as sensor fusion, adaptive control of complex dynamic systems, fuzzy diagnostics and calibration).

Application domains of my research activity include optimisation of cancer chemotherapy treatment, creation of generalised problem solving environment for medical treatment, development of a communication system for downhole measurement and monitoring in the oil and gas industry.
