Entry requirements: You should normally have a second upper class degree (or better) or an MSc in Computer Science or related discipline.

Research Degrees: MSc by Research (1 year), MPhil (2 years) or PhD (3 years).

Application: If you are interested in becoming a research student, you need to complete application form and send it to us together with supporting documentation (see below). In the application form you need to describe the project which you would like to undertake. You may want to come up with a project by:

  • First deciding the area of research that you would you like to work in. The School has a vibrant research community working on a variety of topics

If more than one area of research interests you, please indicate clearly your order of preference in your application form.

  • Once you have decided on the area of research, you need to think about a project you would like to work on. If you find it difficult to come up with a project, send us an email (see email address below) with details of your academic background and interests. We will try to identify a potential supervisor who can help you decide on your project.

  • You then need to write a project description (500-1000 words)

Funding: In the application form, you also need to indicate where you expect the funding for your studies to come from:

  • Own funding: please note that if you are an overseas applicant who has lived in the UK/EU for at least 3 years, and you were not in full-time education you may be eligible for home/EU fees.

  • Sponsorship: if you have a sponsor, please give details application form.

  • Advertised funding: if you are responding to an advert, please indicate this in your application form.

  • School/University: if you expect us to fund your studies, state this clearly in your application form. Please note that only outstanding students will be considered.

Supporting documentation: the following documentation must be submitted with your application form:

  • Two references

  • Copies of your degree transcripts

  • Evidence of English language competence, e.g. copy of IELTS certificate, if English is not your first language.

Outcome: Once we receive your application, we will decide if we have a suitable supervisory team for you. In order to help us decide, we may invite you for an (telephone) interview. You will normally be informed of our decision a few days after the interview.
