Welcome to Miki Y Sun's Home Page
|
|
|
Miki joined the Energy Centre as an
assistant developer since August 2006. Her responsibilities
include design and development of multimedia Online
Distance Learning (ODL) course materials for Postgraduate
Energy Engineering programme. She is particularly
committed to support software configuration and teaching.

for a demo of our online
video lectures.
She has completed a PhD in Computer Science in the
School of Computing,
The Robert
Gordon University, Aberdeen, in 2007. Her PhD thesis Using
the Organizational and Narrative Structures of an e-Book
to Support Comprehension studies various approaches
that apply information retrieval technology to support
e-Book reading, searching, and navigation. An HTML version
of the thesis is available online; a PDF copy can be
downloaded from the
OpenAir@RGU. One of the system prototypes,
iSee, demonstrates an intelligent user interface
of an e-Book that integrates an interactive visualization
tool of the book structure with searching tools to help
readers identify and trace related stories in a book.
Different English versions of the
Holy Bible were used as e-Book corpus in the research.
for a demo of the iSee. More information about
the entire project can be found in this
page.
Her research interests also include
technology enhanced learning, interactive
information retrieval,
e-Books and digital libraries, software usability
evaluation, etc.
She is a member of The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).

Miki is grateful
for the help and support she has received from her colleagues
in the Energy
Centre.
|
 |
Her work also relies
heavily on the support from colleagues in
School of Engineering, School
of Computing, ITS
and Delta.
|
 |
Miki's parents and friends gladly celebrated
her graduation together on the 6th December 2007. It was a long journey for her parents to fly from Xi'an, China to Aberdeen, Scotland, but it was well worth it!
|
 |
Miki
submitted her PhD thesis in May and successfully defended her thesis on 30th August 2007!
She appreciates those
important advices from her supervisors David and Stuart,
and her advisor Dr
Iain Pirie. She is indebted to her colleagues and friends
for many valuable suggestions and encouragements! |
 |
Many
thanks for all who participated in the iSee e-Book user evaluation!
Thirty users completed the story reading and comprehension tasks
with two e-Book browsing interfaces. Sixty four volunteers completed
the online questionnaire. Two Theology PhD students marked the
questions. (September 2006 - January 2007) |
 |
Many
thanks to the IT support team and admin staff in the School
of Computing for setting up the computers and offices for iSee
user evaluation! (September - December 2006) |
 |
Many thanks to the School of Computing for providing 480 GBP book tokens for the iSee user evaluation! (August 2006) |
 |
Miki
is delighted and encouraged by the gifts from Mr Bob Pritchett,
CEO of Logos Research Systems,
USA! A package of Logos 3, Scholar Edition, as well as 500
USD arrived on August, 2006. These gifts are highly appreciated
and will contribute to the user evaluation of the iSee e-Book
project. |
 |
Many
thanks to the International
Bible Society for giving us permission to use the New
International Version of Bible for iSee e-Book user
evaluation! (April 2006) |
 |
The
ProfileSkim's
Adobe Plug-in has been awarded by the British Computer Society's
